The Settle - Carlisle Railway

The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway
Whilst slightly off the main S and C route, the KWVR qualifies for a mention as the Leeds-Carlisle service passes through on its way to the Dales. As it is well worth some webspace in its own right, I have decided to include it on the site. It makes a good objective for a S and C trip South from Carlisle and acts as a useful break in the journey.

The KWVR makes a junction with the electrified Leeds - Skipton line at Keighley and makes a welcome contrast with the nearby minimalist modern Keighley station. The line operates mainly at weekends but in the summer season, trains run throughout the week.

The aim of the preservation society has been to recreate the British Railways scene of the 1950's and this has been very well executed. Not that other periods have been neglected, because some of the steam engines which run are truly vintage and are over 100 years old.

The railway also runs a very successful annual diesel gala which attracts modern traction enthusiasts to see 1960's diesel traction in action and also the very latest traction on loan from U.K. freight operators.

If you enjoy a trip on the line please think about joining the K&WVR society as a menber - Every year you get 3 free day-rover tickets, all your other fares (except special events) at half price and regular issues of the magazine Push and Pull. If there's any better value around, then I'd like to know about it! Needless to say I am a member myself, hence the free publicity.

Damems Loop and signal box, the loop looking freshly ballasted.

April 2000

The passing loop and signaal box were created from scratch by KWVR volunteers. the signal box came from Manningham, near Bradford and was moved into place from temporary store at Oakworth by rail, the operation requiring a local temporary (and planned) power cut as the box was slowly manouvered under overhead cables.

Oakworth Station

May 2000

Oakworth Station was the main location around which the original film "The Railway Children" was filmed. It retains its Edwardian ambience inside and out.

A favourite walk of mine is to alight from the train here and follow the footpath up the valley to Haworth, and if the weather is nice, walk on to Oxenhope. There are several excellent vantage points for photographing the trains along the way.

A  2 car DMU awaiting the 10.35 a..m. departure for Keighley

The early morning departures which are often operated by the 2 car DMU are good for getting a driver's eye view of the line.
