Glossary of mining terms

 Adit or level  This is a horizontal tunnel driven for access to the mineral vein but also serves for drainage from the workings above.
 Angle Bob  A device for changing the direction of motion of pump rods from the horizontal to the verticaal plane.
 Force pump  
 Lady Isabella  Reputed to be the largest water wheel in the world. Located at Laxey, on the isle of man. L.I. was used for pum,ping from the Laxey Mine.
 Launder  A wooden trough or channel used for directing water to (or away from) a particular point. often found directing water onto a wheel.
 Settling ponds (also slime ponds)  Long rectangular shallow ponds used to allow the fine particles from crushing and water separation, to seyle out.
 Vein  A narrow fracture in rock into which minerals have been deposited
