Appleby Station Junction

Trains once diverged here to gain the parallel N.E.R line, in recent years to gain the truncated line to Merrygill Quarry at Kirkby Stephen or Warcop Camp with traffic for the firing ranges. The line is now mothballed pending a new life as the Eden Valley Railway. After Appleby we cross the track bed of the old NER line which then passes underneath the S and C on its way West to Penrith.

Back on the S and C we head North over newly laid track towards Long Marton.

The line crosses the Trout Beck on a 5 arch, 108 yard long viaduct. The red sandsone used for the viaduct was quarried at Dufton Gill which is over 2 miles away. In the background of the photograph is the conical peak of Knock Pike (1306 ft.)

The closed station at Long Marton (closed 1970) is passed and then the Kirkby Thore sidings are reached.

Kirkby Thore plasterboard works is the destination of a regular freight flow of Gypsum which originates from from the flue gas desulphurisation plant at Drax power station. A modern and rather unattractive signal box controls the sidings.

After the closed Newbiggin station is passed and Crowdundle Viaduct is crossed, Culgaith level crossing and station are reached.

Although the station at Culgaith is closed, the crossing box controls the next block section. The old station is followed by the short Culgaith tunnel. (661 yards long, serviced by a single ventilation shaft of 74 feet depth)

The station at Culgaith is virtually intact although now used as a private dwelling. Unusually, the platform coping stones have not been cut back or removed. The station is finished in the attractive red Penrith Sandstone typical of the S and C stations in the Eden valley. It is built in "chalet" style rather than the standard Midland Railway station pattern. Culgaith became an unstaffed halt on 2nd January 1967 and it was closed to passengers on 4th May 1970.

Goods facilities were withdrawn on the 5th October 1964. The old weighbridge office building still survives despite having been out of original use for over 25 years.
