 The Settle - Carlisle Railway
 Ribblehead - The construction works
Around the viaduct lies a stretch of disturbed ground with the remains of the contractors works involved in the construction of the viaduct. At one time there was a brickworks, several temporary railway lines, quarries and of course the shanty towns which housed the workers.
 Ribblehead Viaduct overshadowed by Whernside

This metalled track joins the main road just near the Station Inn. It leads all the way up to the viaduct but parking on here is generally discouraged. It ia better to park up near the junction with the Settle road where a new "official" parking area has recently been created.

This plaque appeared between visits; an interpretive display board might be the next addition.

An old construction railway trackbed near Ribblehead Viaduct

16/09/00

The bed of an old railway diverges away from the metalled track before the viaduct is reached.

There are several of these old trackbeds in the vicinity and thay stand out quite clearly against the poorly drained peaty surroundings. This is due to the better drainage provided due to their rubble core and generally higher relief.

The site of the old engine shed

16/09/00

This is believed to be the site of the temporary engine shed which was used for the contractors locomotives. The ash pit / inspection pit can be quite clearly seen running up the centre of the structure as a filled trench.

Is this the remains of the brickworks chimney?

15/12/00

There is a conspicuous mound of limestone rocks located at one end of a roughly rectangular structure. The concentration of rocks in this one spot suggests to me that this could be the remains of the chimney. If this is the case then the remains of the kilns should be nearby and should be represented by similar mounds of fired brick.

More clues

15/12/00

Further over towards the obvious limekiln which is adjacent to a small quarry is a pile of broken and burnt bricks. It is in the wrong place to be the remains of a brick kiln and is all loose material rather than the remains of a brick structure. Is it simply a dump of rejected material?

Another railway trackbed

27/07/00

This trackbed runs at the a the level of the top of the viaduct and curves to join the line of the present footpath. At one point, what appears to be a load of stone tipped out from a possible wagon derailment, can be seen.
